Begin Decision
As per the SEM's decision to clean up the field of battle the following
policy is put into place in the East Kingdom
All authorized fighters will as of June 1st, 2010 cover any modern of
plastic equipment ( this does not mean any type of metal including
aluminum) with a minimum of a plain tabard. There is no exception to
this rule.
As of January 1st, 2011 all of the following should be covered painted
or hidden to the best of the fighters ability and expense. and all new
fighters after that date will have 1 year from the date of their
qualification card to come into compliance.
. No Exposed Blue, Orange or any Blatantly Modern Plastic.
. No Exposed Blatantly Modern Equipment
While we challenge you to look as authentic as possible the following
exceptions to the above are allowed:
o Any Youth Combat Systems
o Modern Hand Protection
o Modern Eye wear
o Duct Tape (day of repairs are a necessary evil)
o Modern Foot wear
o Modern Fencing Masks
o Adaptive and/or Medically Necessary Equipment
Also, anyone who is not authorized is exempt from this standard.
Remember that you can wear any of the above things if:
. They are covered by a tabard
. They are hidden by clothing.
. They are made to look period by, for example, covered with cloth,
leather, or even paint (as long as the result "an attempt at pre-17th
century appearance" )
End ruling

In principle I get where this is coming from. But there are a few things that need to be worked out before I sign on... (If this came out at the beginning of April, I would be a little bit more suspicious of this sort of policy being legit. )
So is black plastic considered "blatantly modern plastic"? Are Egg Armor's Kydex gauntlets and vanbraces OK? I'm pretty sure that this is meant to apply primarily to body armor, and cover up ugly pickle barrel armor, hockey padding or similar gear. But to what extent does it apply for body and other kinds of armor? I sense that there is going to be quite a bit of discussion about this in the coming weeks... There certainly will need to be some clarifications.
For the time being, His Grace Lucan has suggested a set of generic Northern Army tabards be made up to give to those who need them.
I honestly think every group should make sure it's new fighters are 'covered' up when fighting at events- because as they say, a tabard hides all sins. But just like there is loner garb available at events for newcomers, there probably should be a few tabards available for new fighters. Many newbies come in via an established group or household, but what about those (college kids for example,) who don't? We need to make sure that we take care of those people. I think the year from qualification does try to address this, but it's up to the established groups and fighters to help provide for them and make sure they stay.
The last thing we want to do is discourage any new fighter from getting involved just because they can't afford a top notch kit when they first get involved. We want people out on the field having fun. We have to remember how intimidating it is for people who are deciding if they want to make the initial investment to fight heavy list. Rethink what it costs to start fighting! You need to buy a: Helmet, gorget, body armor, arms, legs, knees, half gauntlets, a good cup, and all the under padding. Not to mention rattan, basket hilt, shield, shield basket, and all the little things and tools you need to put it, and hold it all together. On top of all that, you are going to tell someone that essentially, it need to be 'pretty', (which means more $,) and you can't have anything that isn't period showing? Plastic armor is what myself, and most of the people I know started with. And if it wasn't for that, many of us might not have gotten involved. We can't forget that- we need to ensure that we continue to attract new fighters. Plastic is the gateway for many. It may not be the best, but it is cost effective and allows people to get hooked.
Having said that; Should we try to cover it up when possible? Yes. I get that, I agree with that. But I just hope this doesn't turn into a situation where eventually everything showing has to be period materials. I know that this is not exactly what this policy says, but it seems to be a logical next step.
Just my initial thoughts for the moment...

I'm for cover the modern, not much more.
With this above ruling, I believe hands (gauntlets and baskets) are exempt.
I don't think we should mandate period footware for the reason's Ken expounded upon.
