So, I going to throw another new guy view into this (and when I say new I mean it ((5 weeks in)). I had read this post before GNE and was thinking about what had been said here during the day. I was on the field in armor as soon as I could get out there (i felt a bit bad that i was 2 hours late...) to get out on the field and have vet fighters ask my why I was already in armor and on the field when there was still 1 1/2 before the fight began. Then watching the attrition through out the battles - having to have people swap sides twice because of attrition was a little confusing to me seeing as this was the last chance to really get melee practice in before Pennsic.
This confusion was further when the "Official" fights ended and the fighters were asked do you want to keep fighting and there was a pretty loud yes... but when it came time to suit back up after the little break there was less than a fifth of the people returned to the field. I went through 5 or 6 runs with the unbelted champs before I was forced to call it quits.
This being my first Melee I wanted as much practice as I could but when I left the field finally I was beat and huffing but I left the field because of a cracked cup... and I still feel that I slighted myself because of a protection malfunction for leaving the field early.

I've never heard of a better reason to leave the field!
Keep carying that "heart" to the field.
Continue to lead by example.
Don't judge anyone but yourself. _________________ .

It's been bugging me too....
Now granted... my participation has been light of late... and I'm waaaaayyy out of practice...
But.... I saw something similar at Glen Lynn... Now I have to preface this by saying that they held knight school for about an hour before I got there so maybe everyone was tuckered out because of that...
We ran 3 field battles
2 - 30 min res wall battles
2 - bridge battles
and that was it... Was there a woods battle? I dunno... If so, it must have happened before knight school...
Thats not a whole lot of fighting... Really....
Then the unbelts were taken off to work - I can do another whole angry rant here- where they didnt do anything except stand around...
Everyone else pretty much left the field, some stayed for pickups...
Maybe thats all the fighting we did when I first started too, but man, it felt like alot more... I cant honestly remember...
Maybe we do a day like this- (next year I suppose...)
around 10am - knight school
11am - start battles
assume 3 hours of scheduled battles
2pm everyone who wants to be on the champions teams runs through gruelling drills, while everyone else does pickups
3pm ressurection broken field battle - have a wall, a small bridge and an open field and fight until everyone on one side quits.
I think something like that would fill most peoples fight card.

I would do events like this all damn war season. They would have to drag me off the field or my wife would drag me off to change some diapers. I would love to see our events shift to this.
1.) Knight School: Gives chiv a chance to meet guys, gives unbelts a chance to learn from chiv. This is win win
2.) 3 Hours of battles. Lets fight the event and have a good time and not just train for Pennsic. This is another win win you get to fight and have fun. Not just stand around in the sun while guys talk.
3.) Hell yeah lets run drills and get back to basics. The guys who want it will rise to the top here. The ones who don't or are not capable will take a break here. Even if you don't make one of the teams you walk away from this a better melee fighter.
4.) End it with a res battle we can all have fun. With unlimited lives we can just run around having a great time and practicing with our fellow EK buddies. I bet the last guys off the field will be the next generation of Dukes/Chiv.
Sir autocrat an event next year and run it like this. I bet nobody would walk away from this complaining about the fighting. _________________ Boot ALA D Sebastion Flare |

I sit here and read all of what you noble lords are saying. I am a newb so I cannot comment with any weight behind it. I have yet to fight a war... a battle.. a melee. Knowing that I have much to learn, I revel in it.
I am 39 years old and just now getting involved.
I want my glory. I want my fight. I want BLOOD! (relatively, of course.)
I mean to say that I have a fire and passion for the fight. Think rookie. I am looking forward to my first Pennsic War. I'm looking forward to getting my hind parts clobbered so I learn how to not get them clobbered. I am eager to develop and become a part of the culture. I have heard about the politics of the SCA from those I know who fought in it. I'm not much on battlefield politics. I am a grunt. A fighter. There can be a way to bring back the glory days of old. Get back to basics. _________________ Aiden MacCuinlas
